My driveway has a large 30ft by 35ft pad. When it was pored in 1972 they only put one expansion joint in the whole large area. See attached picture.

At this point the concrete has numerous cracks that are between 1/8" and 1/4" wide. So fare there has not been a lot of problems, but I would like to keep water from getting into the cracks and freezing.

What (if anything) should I use to fill these cracks?

Best thing to fill these cracks, is our 4920 Polyurea joint filler. 4920 gets hard in about 10 minutes, yet stays slightly flexible for cracks to move some. 4920 is a 2 part cartidge.

I'd recommend to also saw cut down the middle ( horizontaly and one vertical saw cut) to provide relief of stress on the new cracks repairs. You can rent a concret saw for a few hours, ( Just snap a couple chalk lines and spray them with hair spray, so they stay for the wet cutting process. thne power wasj the driveway to clean up).

Good luck!

Matthew's suggestion to use 4920 joint sealer on the cracks is an excellent idea. The stuff works great. One potential problem area in the photo you sent was the lifted portions of the slab on the right had side which had obviously be patched with cold-patch asphalt.

Depending what you are trying to accomplish and what your budget is, there are additional alternatives.

1.) You would need to remove that old cold-patch asphalt and diamond grind the adjoining areas to an appropriate slope.
2.) Bottom fill the existing cracks with 4920 and use a crack chaser to create additional "cracks" resembling a flagstone pattern over the whole area.
3.) Do a VBP micro topping application while taping off your "cracks".
4.) Pull the tape and seal it.

Patrick - Thanks for your advice, but there is no "cold-patch" on my 40 year old concrete driveway.

The dark spot down the middle near the one expansion joint they did put in the driveway is actually water from a downspout from our house.

Above and to the right of the downspout is an area of dirt.

The driveway is actually very flat and has had no lifting considering all of the trees that are within 10-15ft.

I have some questions about the 4920 joint sealer.
If the cracks are between 1/8" and 1/4" wide, approximately how many linear feet does each twin-tubes fill?
What kind of sand should be used? Can sand from Home Depot or Lowes be used?
What is the length of the twin-tubes?
Should I cut along the cracks to clean up the opening?

Thanks for you help.

The 4920 is a 2 part cartridge (2 tubes) and should yeild 20-25' of crack @ 1/4" wide by 1" deep. It's best to fill the crack slightly above grade, so you can grind it flush in 10-15 minutes. be careful with using sand the fill large cracks, as you can use too much, decreasing the amount of "crack" surface area to bond. Only use enough sand to keep the 4920 from leaking out the bottom or better yet, use backer rod to accomplish this.

Make to follow the instructions on using the 4920, and be sure to get the air out of the tubes, prior to application, by squeezing it out, while pointing the tubes upward.
